"De Reuzen" (The Giants in Flemish) presented in Antwerp from 19 to 21 June 2015 is the 4th creation from the Saga of the Giants to be programmed in Antwerp at the invitation of Zomer Festival- 900,000 spectators.
The Time of The Whales....
24 million years ago Antwerp was born to a volcano while the moon had not come out of the sea yet, the belly of the Earth was spitting molten rock, like explosions of vomit before the words still unknown to men who did not exist.
It expelled whales. Hundreds, thousands of them.
Some of them were blown by the wind and fell into the ocean. It was the only time when giant fish could be seen swimming in the clouds, tapping their tails in the void before falling into the water. Did you know that whales can be heard 5,000 km away from one part of the ocean to the other?
They moan from the pleasure of being living and listening to someone respond. Still, the Earth, by dint of sending its mammals to the afterlife, immediately had a pyramid of bones that formed hills. Piles of bones, piles and piles. As time and dust settled, grass appeared and much later women and men were lost in the universe.
Even later, when Napoleon's followers, busy defeating England, were digging huge basins for ships in the centre of Antwerp, they pulled out the remains of giant whales, clavicles, vertebrae and even a small soldier, who had accidentally fallen from a ladder into the mud of the foundations, heard the roar of the ocean with his ears in the mud.
And with a tormented mind he saw in real life a hand, a giant hand stretched out, asleep, ready to come out of Antwerp to pluck people's hearts.
